“What’s in a name?

That which we call a rose,

By any other name,

Would smell just as sweet.”

William Shakespeare

I got a phone call yesterday

From our very confused vet

He really wanted to know

If we really now had 27 pets

I laughed so hard at his confusion

I thought about our pet nicknames

And then, he really seemed amused

As he learned about our ‘Name Game’

One of our Katrina dogs had been, ‘Eddie’

Named by my fellow rescuers in New Orleans

My very nasty wife, soon changed it to, ‘Junior’

I call him ‘Momma’s Boy,’ he’s her dog, it seems

Our other Katrina dog was named Tater, after French Fries

But since Day One, my wife has called him ‘Daddy’s Boy’

Almost four years later, he still guards me in the bathroom

As my extremely mean wife, still howls and yelps, with joy

Our southwest dog hails from the Navajo Nation

And his name in our vet’s records should be, ‘Turbo’

But he refuses to go anywhere, without his teddy bear

So we often call him by the bear’s name – ‘Navajo Joe’

My wife calls our feisty little rat terrier mix ‘Little Jack’

While I call him ‘Big Jack,’ to boost up his canine ego

Two of our old sibling cats she calls, ‘Boris and Natasha’

I call them ‘Groucho’ and ‘Marxie,’ and on and on, we go

The Katrina cat that I brought home, who looked so sad

I had called ‘Stinky’ because she loves to sniff my shoes

My spouse vehemently refused to use that name, for her

So she re-named her ‘Flower’ and now, I call her that, too

The feral kitten that I brought home, was named ‘Valentina’

Since I brought her home from a factory, on Valentine’s Day

But now, we both quite often refer to her as our ‘Pretty Kitty’

And our veterinarian’s records somehow still list her as, ‘Stray’

And our latest little kitten, was first named ‘Tiger Lily’

Until we very humorously found out that ‘she’ was a male

So, my perturbed spouse abruptly changed it to, ‘Pee Wee’

But I call him ‘Billy the Kid,’ since he can break out of any jail

Luckily, our many cats and dogs all seem to know their numerous nicknames

And I think they’re amused, since my wife and I, also play this ‘Name Game’

She likes to call me: Pee Wee, Little Big Man, Gringo Slick, and Mr. A..Hole

While I refer to her as: Apache, Mean Tall Woman, Alien, Vieja, or Goofy Dame

But what’s in a name?

That which we call a rose,

By any other name,

Still smells just as sweet!

©2009, Mr. Ed,

AKA – Pee Wee, Little Big Man,

Gringo Slick, and, of course, Mr. A..Hole

DEAR MR. A.HOLE -

Perhaps Mean Tall Woman has mixed you up with the musician from Australia -

ATHOL GUY ? Anyways - "PEE-POT" is a much more gooder NAME!

Oh Yeah - almost forgot - if you think your Vet is confused, if anyone ever reads your
Will - all those names will wreak havoc!

TomKat - Hoot - El Diablo - El Gato - His Horniness !

Perhaps there's not much in the name, but there seems to be love and care for all. The work you do for animals is wonderful.

Such a wonderful write of love - if I could have pets where I lived, I'd have an apartment full. Have enough love for them ... well done, Ed, and give your 27 or however many pets you DO have (((HUGS))) pats and purrs - and give a (((HUG))) to your long suffering wife! LOL She loves you, though. Can tell by the nicknames. LOL
