“There was about him,

A suggestion of lurking ferocity,

As though the Wild still lingered in him,

And the Wolf in him, merely slept.”

Jack London

I think I saw my very first wolf

When I was a child of about three

He was standing out on the lakeshore

What a memorable thrill that was for me

I was standing in the window of a cabin

A marvelous place, up in the northwood

An old friend of our family had owned it

He thought everything in nature, was good

I remember how very excited I got when I saw it

Especially when it began howling up at the moon

I think my love of wolf began right then and there

His mesmerizing call, still one of my favorite tunes

I have been fortunate enough down through the years

To have seen and heard several wolves, out in the wild

From the frozen Alaskan tundra down to New Mexico

And every time I catch a glimpse of one, I always smile

To me, we humans can learn much from these creatures

They are loyal, and they teach and they love their children

They rejoice in nature and in the freedom to be themselves

But very sadly to me, many humans want to bring their end

Unlike other wild predators, wolves never attack humans

Yet, we begrudge them eating ‘our’ elk, moose, and deer

And, if we all don’t start advocating, on their right to live

Soon, they will be gone forever, and I will shed many tears

I think I saw my very first wolf,

When I was a child of about three;

He was standing out on the lakeshore,

What a memorable thrill that was for me.

Sure the wolf does kill some deer and other animals
But unlike some humans only what they need to survive
How many times have we heard of hunters, who take the head and leave the rest
Wolves also keep our rodent population down somewhat
Great write Ed
Mope you have a wonderful day

What beauty and understanding are in your poetic words, Ed. We share the love for, and strength and loyalty of, Brother Wolf.
"Your heart, like mine,
Is saddened
By the misunderstanding
Of your proud countenance."
a part of my poem "Wolf"

One day...one day...the laws will again protect this wondrous creature.

If only each of us would think about the earth and it's creatures half as much as you do, the world would be such a better place.

People are stupid. Plain and simple. I saw my first wild wolf in Alaska in 1975. He stood fearlessly just outside my pickup one night as I cat napped while the mechanics were making repairs to some equipment down the road. Just about nose to nose. Gorgeous animal. I'll never forget. Patrick.

You know something Ed, I don't believe this country values life of any kind anymore and that is the saddest part of all, when our Constitution begins with "LIFE". What a sad legacy we leave behind....

Be always safe,
Karen

Pee Wee,your sis tigr lily is in tears now just thinking of how
unimaginable it is to not have wolves. They are a creation of God's just as we are,and if it means that little to others, that tells us we all are meaningless in the sight of those who don't understand God given laws, and refuse to learn of them, Sad and frightening future for us all! A splendid series, dear brother!

The wolf and his cousins the coyote and fox are so close to our own domesticated pets that how can we destroy them. They are part of the last hope of nature to be kept alive for our future generations. Keep up the great advocacy my friend.

I saw my first wolf in Europe, would you believe? through binoculars up north east Norway, kind of tundra there just before the snow. He was a big one, nearly as big as my shepherd dog Kaiser, standing there with the same serenity, slowly looking around, taking all in.
Thanks!

Georg

We need to do all we can to educate others about wolves; they are not bad creatures, just misunderstood; and they deserve to live like anything else on this earth! Powerfully penned, and that piccy is visually arresting! A "howling" good write; well done, Ed!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :)
