“Think occasionally

Of the suffering,

Of which you spare yourself,

The sight.”

Albert Schweitzer

Music: God Help The Outcasts

The more that I work in animal welfare

The more disgusted and disheartened I get

Far too few, even think about animal cruelty

We haven’t even put a dent in animal abuse yet

In my last poem, I wrote of the plight of Gentle Ben

A gentle, blind, old male, abused as a puppy mill stud

The pictures highlighted above, are puppy mill ‘bitches’

Forced to produce litter after litter of pups, mired in crud

Their cramped cages are atrocious, and filthy, and pain-filled

They all live covered in feces, and urine, and mange, and sores

Their offspring, who survive, are taken from them at four weeks

So they can be cleaned up, and transported to America’s pet stores

And these horrendously abused female dogs are given no rest between litters

They are kept for as many years as possible in a continual cycle of pregnancy

Then, when they get too old to have any more pups, they are dumped or killed

So we carefree, uninformed, uncaring Americans can buy a cute puppy with glee

Some of the ‘lucky’ puppy mill ‘bitches’ are eventually rescued from their living hell

By extremely dedicated and unappreciated animal welfare employees and volunteers

But far too many of these abused prisoners of profit and pain, have to be put to sleep

They cannot even be given a few years of freedom and love, and for them, I shed tears

“Why should man expect

His prayers for mercy from Above,

To be answered,

When he shows no mercy,

To those below.”

Pierre Troubetzkoy

Puppy mills are a terrible thing. Puppies cant even be taken from their mothers until they are 7 weeks old and some people even say that is too early. Those cute puppies people buy can become and are often sick. Puppy mills are right up there with dog fighting on my list.

This always breaks my heart, I just cannot understand how insensitive people have become..GREED and Profit go hand in hand and then that leads to someone or something living in pain.
You always wake us up, Ed!
Peace, love, and light,

Dog breeding needs strict supervision and it's horrible it hasn't happened yet. This made me physically sick to even think of. I still have a little poodle that I rescued, she has been with me two years and she still crawls to me because she's afraid to stand up. Even with much love and attention she is scarred for life. And I saw the Dog Town special on rehabilitating the Michael Vick dogs, he should never be playing ball again what he did to those innocent dogs convicted them to a life sentence. What a messed up country and legal system that would allow him to just slip back into his life as if nothing happened.

This is the most God-offending slavery of all, and should be just as illegal as human slavery! I believe we must finally come to national legislation that prevents this type of economic activity by making it illegal and any type of dog breeding subject to the most stringent permitting process.

Heart-breaking story my friend. You have exposed the cruelty of those who imprison animals and make profit out if their pain and misery. "If you want mercy from above show mercy to those below" is also a message in the islamic teachings though not seriously practiced in many moslem countries. Thanks my dear Ed

it is so sad to know that this can still go on no matter how many times it's reported. I think many people don't believe that when they go to one of those fancy stores that this could be true. Thank you for keeping the word out there. LadyJ

...they need to be taken down...these amimals are more human than the ones running these mills...what I don't get is I see shows on Oprah..etc that shows shelters going in to get the dogs they can't use any more...but what I am sooo confused about is why they are not busted and imprisoned like Michael Vick...??? gosh...sooo frustrating and sad!!!!!!!!!!

There is a lot of hell being sown, for the active participants, and those that don't care!!!!!! Multiply this picture that you see by thousands, and there are still judges that will ding you for defamation, if you call them puppy mills, instead of breeding facilities, it's high time that those who can speak, all of us, while we can, put our voice and multiply it for all to hear, if any of us ever thinks we shall ever get to the vaunted paradise.
Approach your moral authorities, your ministers, priests, rabbies, immams, and maybe even the pope, ask them to make it an issue at every sermon, and if they refuse ask them why, ask your radio and Tv stations to have this issue front and centre, till the politicians finally see the light and outlaw severely all this suffering and pain, you want to get to heaven, this is the way. Ed, I seen these places in person, they are called breeding facilities, because the self serving Pet Industry insists. This is hard reading, but bring it again, and again and the organ. God bless you! Jasmin Horst

All I can ask is this: "Why??"

Heartbreaking write; powerfully penned! Thanks for speaking for those who have no voice: our animal friends! They need an advocate like you on their side; more of us should do the same, speak out against such atrocities!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :( >tears! <

I have never bought a dog at the pet store
I go to the breeder so I can see the parents of the pet I am buying

If I'm not getting a new friend there, I have had several dogs given to me that were going to be destroyed, because the owners didn't want them anymore
One in particular a black lab who was one of the best friends I ever had
Great write Ed, thanks for posting it
Hope you have a good day

many puppy mills have been busted in NY ... this sadistic condition represents the negative soul of mankind and manifests to represent the essence of war, hostility and indifference ... the duplicity of existence is sometimes overwhelming ...

Where is our humanity??? Puppy mills and the like disgust me! I wish people would wake up and stop the endless cycle ...shut these places down...adopt a pet from a shelter...one that really needs to know human kindness still exists. Good Job!! This needs to be in our faces all the time....

The ending stanza, the picture, is heartbreaking - this shouldn't be. Why I said yesterday in my review of your poem "Gentle Ben", the only pets I've ever had were feral, adopted from the pet store, or given me by friends or relatives - I refuse to perpetuate the cycle of profit and pain. :( May this cease -

THE PICTURE YOU PAINT IS HORRIFIC AND EXTREMELY SAD...ANIMALS WERE CREATED BY GOD IN LOVE AND DO NEED OUR LOVE AND CARE...IT IS WRONG TO ABUSE THEM AS YOU HAVE WELL DESCRIBED...THE STRONG SADLY, HAVE ALWAYS TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THE WEAK. BUT JUST A THOUGHT...GOD DOES NOT THINK LIKE MAN...HIS WAYS ARE HIGHER THAN OURS AS THE HEAVENS ARE HIGHER THAN THE EARTH...IF THESE PEOPLE INVOLVED...TURN FROM THEIR WAYS AND PRAY FOR FORGIVENESS WITH SINCERE HEARTS...GOD WILL FORGIVE AND SHOW HIS LOVE FOR THEM TOO, THROUGH MERCY AND GRACE. I REALIZE YOUR PAIN ED, FOR IT IS YOUR 'CALLING' TO BE A PROTECTORATE OF ANIMALS BUT DON'T GIVE UP ON THE ABUSERS...THEY CAN BE CHANGED...THERE IS STILL HOPE AS LONG AS THERE IS LIFE. THANKS FOR SHARING AND GOD BLESS YOU. JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
