“Youth is like Spring,

An over praised season.

Autumn is the mellower season,

And what we lose in flowers,

We more than gain, in fruits.”

Samuel Butler

The day had dawned crisp and clear

It was now time to hit the backroads

My dogs were already in the truck

“Come on, Sleepyhead, Let’s Go!”

And soon, two humans and their dogs

Were heading north, on a country lane

My wife, of course, was still half asleep

“You and your shaggy dogs are all insane.”

“You won’t say that when we get there,

Those apples are ready to be plucked;

And wait until you see those pumpkins,

We are gonna fill up this big old truck!”

And several hours later, we had arrived

At a delightful old apple orchard and farm

Tucked away, up in the northern pine forest

Filled with fresh produce and antique charm

There is nothing quite as invigorating

As getting out in nature, at harvest time

Picking succulent apples and lush pumpkins

Just buying them in a store would be a crime

And several wonderful hours later

After hot apple cider and apple donuts

And, after we purchased some apple wine

My spouse said, “Maybe you’re not so nuts!”

And the long ride home was just as delightful

The trees were putting on quite an autumn show

“We’ll have to come back up here for a sleigh ride,

In about a month or two, right after the first big snow!”

“You are nuts, Mr. Pumpkin Head.”

“Yeah, but it’s the only way to go!”

The day had dawned crisp and clear,

It was now time to hit the backroads;

My dogs were already in the truck,

“Come on, Sleepyhead, Let’s Go!”

My family are all going to an annual farm apple picking event on Saturday...they have a corn maze the kids can wander through, a pumpkin patch where the kids get to pick their own pumpkins out, a hay ride and of course apple picking. Your poem really got me in the mood for this...thanks.

... and then, all the delicious apple wood smoking the house out on chillier, darker days. I was brought up on West Country Scrumpy, so guess that explains a lot! :)) I'm intoxicated on just the heady fumes of this one, Dad. Perhaps I'll get to send you some Dorset Apple Cake... xx

Very wonderful... and ol' Autumn just sounds like a dream from those of us still doing time in the "steamy south" - but you always find such wonderful quotes. How?
“Youth is like Spring, An over praised season..." Such truth to that and maybe America will finally come out of its "Spring Praising-adolescent worship mania" and see the sanity and value of the virtues of a maturing, autumnal reflections. We need to grow up and CONSERVE what Nature has so bountifully given us for free...
Not squander it.
Thanks for your continual "Harvest" of messages...

The one thing one can comment with certainty is that there were dogs and their humans, cos, who was leading who? And that provocative picture to remind everybody that next is Halloween? Yes you ain't nuts, just pecan!

Loved your poem! We did exactly the same thing on Saturday with our son and his wife and our delightful grandson, Max. It was completely awesome. The fresh air, the sweet crisp apples and other veggies. Then I baked apple pies on Sunday...what a treat! Love this time of the year. Thanks for sharing your experience Ed.

Ed, this made me smile as it brought back memories of my apple and pumpkin picking days in Connecticut with my family! And the hayrides...oh, I could go on and on! I really enjoyed this.
