Each October, The American Humane Association
Now partners with animal shelters, across our land
There are thousands and thousands of dogs in need
Finding them loving new homes, is this month’s plan
By choosing to adopt a dog from a shelter this month
Instead of purchasing one from a breeder or a pet store
We in this nation, can tackle pet overpopulation head on
If we don’t, every year, there will sadly be more and more
There are about 68 million dogs today in American households
Yet, only a mere 20 percent of them were adopted from shelters
And, millions and millions of unwanted dogs, will be euthanized
Since ‘shopping’ instead of ‘adopting,’ so many people still prefer
And today, because of our abysmal home foreclosure situation
Thousands and thousands of additional dogs are now homeless
Every dog that I have ever been privileged to share my life with
Has come from a shelter or the streets, and these dogs are the best
Over ten million lovable and adorable dogs enter shelters, annually
And today, we are finding more and more ‘dumped dogs’ everywhere
Please find it in your heart to spread the word about Adopt a Dog Month
And I hope you join the ranks of canine loving human beings, who still care
Today, I have five marvelous canine companions – two that came from shelters, two that were tragically left behind when Hurricane Katrina roared into the Gulf Coast, and one that was severely abused and then dumped in a park near my home. He was so afraid of human beings that I had to trap him in a cat trap. But in the year that we’ve had him now, our Little Jack has transformed into a very lovable and playful little dog.
Our little Chihuahua/Spitz mix, Chica Blanca, had also been severely abused, and then cruelly dumped in an alley. She was attempting to survive on garbage, and fighting feral cats for scraps of food.
When I found her in the backroom of a big city shelter, they were about to put her down because she had lashed back at our enormous modern day callousness and cruelty, and had bitten their veterinarian.
I gave her a second chance at life, and she has given my wife and I many years of loyalty and unconditional love. Today, she would gladly give her life, protecting either one of us.
Please consider adopting a very deserving shelter dog this Adopt A Shelter Dog Month, and please don’t purchase your next dog from a breeder or a pet store until we can somehow find all of the abused, abandoned, and homeless dogs in America – the loving new homes that they all truly deserve.
