A Sad Follow-up to ‘The Last Of His Kind’

Our human numbers are expanding
Today, at a horrifyingly fast pace
There may come a time, very soon
When Earth is truly a desolate place
Our astounding population growth
Is pushing most other species, aside
We are losing 21 species a day, now
Those remaining, have no space to hide
There were only 1 billion of us, in 1800
Today, we are approaching 7 billion strong
By 2050, we may approach 15 billion humans
On a dying planet, that has gone so totally wrong
Over fifty percent of Earth’s land mass, has been taken over, by us
We consume 50 percent of Earth’s remaining fresh water supplies
We already consume over 50 percent of the ocean’s remaining food
And 40 percent of Earth’s land, we use to raise crops on which we dine
And the above numbers and statistics, are based on 6.8 billion people
What will happen to our nonhuman neighbors, when we hit 15 billion
My guess is by then, we’ll consume 100 percent of Earth’s resources
And just about every other type of living creature on Earth, will be done
No population of any large vertebrate has grown this fast
In the entire long history of this finite planet, that we call Earth
While our numbers continue to grow, other Earth species vanish
These are horrifyingly sad facts, which are hardly filled with mirth
