“Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories,

And love of kindred,

And we are better throughout the year,

For having, at least in spirit,

Become a child again, at Christmas time.”

Laura Ingalls Wilder

Having just decorated our outdoor pine tree

My thoughts quickly turned to an old memory

The day when my father and I used to head out

On his quest to find, ‘The Perfect Christmas Tree’

My father would always wake me up at dawn

While the rest of our family was still fast asleep

He would whisper, “Now dress real warm, Son!”

And out into the cold dawn, he and I would creep

Dad never even gave me time to eat breakfast

And, he always insisted that we not take the car

Whether it was a sunny winter’s day, or below zero

We would visit Christmas tree lots, both near and far

And, in most of these delightful childhood memories

I recall my father often liking a tree, very near our home

But he would never purchase the first one that he admired

So onward through the old city streets, he and I would roam

I think nearly every Christmas tree salesman knew him

And I know he enjoyed bickering for the very best price

And, thinking back on those glorious Christmas tree hunts

I know he would never settle for a tree that was merely ‘nice’

He always insisted on purchasing a very tall tree

And, I knew we’d have to trim it with a hacksaw

But whether Evergreen, Douglas, or Blue Spruce

It was always a magnificent tree filling me with awe

And when my father finally found that ‘perfect tree’

I remember the very bright twinkle in his loving eyes

Recalling how he loved to barter for that perfect tree

Still brings many extremely joyous memories and smiles

“This truly is the Perfect Christmas Tree, Mr. Kostro,

And I couldn’t possibly let it go for less than ten dollars!”

My father would hand the salesman a five, pick up the tree,

And ‘A Very Merry Christmas to You!’ he would then holler

Soon, Dad and I would lovingly haul that ‘perfect tree’ back home

And, we’d stay up half the night, decorating it, and getting it just right

“Isn’t that the most perfect Christmas Tree you have ever seen, Son?”

And I’d reply, “It sure is, Dad!” which I think always filled him with delight

Having just decorated our outdoor pine tree,

My thoughts quickly turned to an old memory;

The day when my father and I used to head out,

On his quest to find, That Perfect Christmas Tree.

How perfect the tree and your memories. I'm thinking the latter to be a blessing for many years, Ed. Love this, 'cause it brings memories to my mind, also...thank you, dear friend.

Wonderful! This is a short visit to childhood. through your lines you showed us a committed Dad and his son sharing light moments as they wade into the cold winter air to buy a christmans tree. In moving from one vendor to another he was not only examinig the prices but also teaching you not to buy anything unless you have checked out with many shops. He also wanted you to look into the difference in terms of quality and price before you have paid the money. I will apply this lesson to my son. Thanks for sharing this great story.

A beautiful write my friend, I could envision you both bundled up with coats, scarves, gloves, and boggins searching the snow covered lots for that perfect tree....a beautiful write, reminds me of an old Christmas movie. Today everything is so convenient, if many had to go in search of a perfect, or any tree for that matter, I don't think there would be as many trees in homes. Myself, I think it's a wonderful tradition that I wouldn't mind being a part of...beautiful write my friend!

This brought my tears, I remember the many years long ago that I went in the woods with my daddy to get the Christmas tree. Beautiful pen Ed. Yes every year the tree was the "Perfect" one.

You're gettin me in the mood nicely, Dad... this is so warm and twinkly and as delicious as a marshmallow chocolate. We have had "pine-pulling day" on the heath here today; four hours of pulling stray saplings (which undermine the stability of the natural habitat) in exchange for a tree! A lot of hard work but a very canny way of managing the forest! Wishing you always "the perfect tree". xx

Brings back pleasant memories and laughter gathered 'round the tree ... except for the time Daddy got one that was ... ummmm ... a little on the tall side? Wouldn't fit in the breezeway to get it in the house. So ... Daddy left it in the breezeway, top all bent over ... it was hysterical! Thanks, hadn't thought about that in years. Well done, Ed, and Merry Christmas. :)

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

I love childhood memories like this. My dad and I were also very close. I have memories of us always meeting after school at the drug store counter for a soda and hotdog. We should make memories like these with our children. " What we leave behind is not what is engraved in stone, but what is engraved in peoples hearts." A very nice write,Ed. Thanks for the memories!
