“In a world older and more complex than ours,

Animals move finished and complete,

Gifted with extensions of the senses

That we have lost, or never attained,

Living by voices, we shall never hear.”

Henry Beston

On every journey to San Francisco

I’d soon head over to old Pier 39

To observe all of those Sea Lions

Their preferred hangout since 1989

Many tourists like me, loved watching them

But many of the locals, wanted them to leave

And, these sad days, Sea Lions are being killed

Since we don’t want to share dwindling fisheries

And very mysteriously, they are now gone

Not one Sea Lion now remains, on that pier

They all vanished, right before the Holidays

Skipping all the human celebrations and cheer

No more of their boisterous calls on the pier

No more of their playful antics, and jostling

Old Pier 39 today, stands so very eerily silent

With no children looking, smiling, or laughing

Many thought they’d return to the Seal Rocks

A rocky point, which used to be their hangout

But the manager of the old Cliff House up there

Has reported that no Sea Lions are out and about

So, the mystery now remains, on the silent pier

Have they all gone off somewhere, to find food?

Or, do they know something that we humans don’t

Or perhaps, they’ve tired of mankind’s selfish mood

In the last few days, several Sea Lions have been spotted

Roughly 500 miles to the north, along the coast of Oregon

And, if they now begin eating ‘our’ dwindling fish, up there

I wonder how long before humans there will want them Gone

Much of Earth’s land, sea, and sky,

Seems far more silent to me, these days;

And, I sadly wonder what future generations,

Will have left, of nature’s once glorious, array.

I don't think there is anything sinister here. El Nino' year and the warm water is farther north than usual just like the fish. Patrick

How tragic and selfish; and most people seem to just shrug. I guess they feel they don't need animals. One reason I don't eat seafood anymore unless I can catch it and kill it myself. Just too much selfish in ocean harvesting; imagine, now we are moving into Antarctic waters an Arctic fisheries, stealing the last seafood (even Krill!) from the mouths of these sea mammals that depend on it. Someday "WE" will be at the end of that broken food chain and we will have no one to blame but oursevles...
Best, Mike

This is just sickening and I really don't understand the logic behind killing the seals and other animals too. I think mankind's greed is now completely out of hand and what the future brings is anyone's guess...

Be always safe,
Karen

we know too many will continue to abuse nature because they fingure they won't be here so why care, they don't think of the future of their children, grandchildren etc. Thank you Ed and hope thos will read.

If we continue to abuse nature, we will become mysteriously gone. This is something people fail to understand. Thank you for this informative work.

A timely write, knowing what just happened in Haiti, but on a larger scale, what is going to happen to all of us, especially our innocent grandchildren, the poison we have spread over the eons, is now taking its effect, it has reached every living tissue, and dying is all that has to be done to complete the cycle, sadly,

Nature has a way of protecting its own, so maybe the sea lions actually do know something we don't. Creepy thought, considering San Francisco teeters on the edge of a dangerous fault line. Very interesting write, Ed.
