“God made all of the creatures,

He gave them our love and our fear;

To give sign, we and they are His children,

There is only one family here.”

Robert Browning

I was out for another winter’s walk,

With my faithful old canine pal, Turbo;

When he stopped, and he began pawing,

At something that was buried in the snow.

I knelt down, and soon saw what it was,

A new-born kitten, lying under the snow;

It was still breathing, so I scooped it out,

As I raced back towards home, with Turbo.

My wife and I wrapped it in a warm blanket,

But it only gasped a few breaths, then it died;

As my wife and I now carried it out to our shed,

We both looked at that tiny kitten, and we cried.

Yet one more, starving, homeless, unwanted being,

That never had much of a chance at all, in this life;

I went back with Turbo, to where he had found it,

And when we got back home, I said to my sad wife:

“I found numerous feline tracks, out there in that area,

It seems a mother cat was leading her babies, somewhere;

Probably in search of some food and shelter, for her family,

And that kitten Turbo found, was just too weak, to get there.”

When the ground thaws out a little, I’ll bury that kitten,

And my wife and I and our pets, will have a remembrance;

Sadly wondering why we humans care so little about other life,

And, hoping the next one that we find, will have a better chance.

“Think occasionally of all the suffering,

 Of which you spare yourself the sight.”

Albert Schweitzer

Oh how sad, the poor little thing never stood a chance. Tales such as this one really hit at the core of all humanity and the total disregard for life...

Be always safe,

What a shame the kitten couldn't be save, you were so close it seems. Feral cats are a huge concern here locally. Difficult to capture let alone domesticate. Neutering has had an impact. Patrick

"Life finds a way."
Sometimes it isn't pretty. But there is a natural order of things.
You did your best, Your heart is the best.

Aw! What a tragic story, Ed...poor helpless little creatures...life is so cruel at times. I can't bear to think about an animal suffering...

Yes if we'd see all the suffering, we'd be overwhelmed, there sure is plenty of it, but you don't mind suffering, seeing and looking, and helping, if you can, you don't for the sake of selfishness mind
despite that suffering in you heart, you are truly compassionate Ed,
Bless You! Jasmin Horst

Human race, animal race, where's the difference? perhaps in the first lack of compassion. That kitten shouldn't have died.
