My heart grows ever sadder
With the things I hear and see
Our human cruelty, is on the rise
Is there any hope left, for humanity?
Hundred of dogs, are now being found
Like the one shown above this sad poem
Locked up, left behind, no food and water
When people now, foreclose on their homes
When Izzy above, was rescued from his prison
He couldn’t walk, or even stand up, on his own
His body weight was half that of a dog his type
Heartbroken, and left there to die, in that home
An elderly neighbor of mine, recently died
And his many relatives, quickly swooped in
Driving off, all of his beloved dogs and cats
Surely, making some profit today, is not a sin
A friend of mine recently found a starving dog
It had been chained in the cold, under a deck
The owner begging him to "Just take it away,
I'm tired of its whining; it's a god-damn pest."
More and more cats, are being found
Burned with lighter fluid, and gasoline
Hideous acts committed out of boredom
By today’s modern day children and teens
Scores of unwanted puppies and kittens
Are being thrown out of cars, on highways
Hell, why should we spay and neuter our pets
If they have offspring, we’ll just toss them away
And more and more of these unfortunate creatures
Are being run over, poisoned, and tortured to death
Modern human cruelty, sadly seems to have no bounds
And animal lovers now fear, the worst isn’t even here yet
If we human beings are capable of doing these things to pets
Imagine the horrors in store, for Earth’s remaining wild animals
Many fear we will not stop, until we annihilate, most living things
We modern humans don’t seem to have one bit of compassion at all
My heart grows ever sadder,
With the things I hear and see;
Our human cruelty, is on the rise,
Is there any hope left, for humanity?

Your first and last stanza IS the sad refrain of this poem for our world; including all the wild ones (wolves, polar bears) who will be dispensed with because they are "in the way" -

I would love a doggie, but I've made up my mind I can't get one until I have a good 10 or 15 thousand dollars aside. I know people who drop way more than that on Vet bills. I'm spending that much to keep my son insured per year. Love to give is not enough.
If I could just get my son to fetch the newspaper...
But honestly- this is a wonderful but heart breaking poem. I'll do all I can for animal welfare.
