“Regard Heaven as your Father,

Earth as your Mother,

And all Living Things,

As your Brothers and Sisters.”

A Native American Proverb

Music: Visions

Today, February 2nd

Is ‘Groundhog Day’

Will he see his shadow

And will Winter, go or stay?

This furry little brown groundhog

Is a member of Earth’s Squirrel Family

He is also known today, as a ‘Woodchuck’

A word derived from a Native American story

The Lenape people, also known today as the Delaware

Believed that ‘Wodjak,’ the burrow dwelling groundhog

Was their very ancient and very wise ancestral grandfather

Who one day emerged from the underworld and sat on a log

It was their belief that their ancient forefathers

Began life on this planet as animals, not as humans

And Grandfather Wodjak appeared one day long ago

To live and hunt and respect our Mother Earth, as a man

I have always loved these ancient Native American legends and lores

These people held a deep respect, for all the living beings in our world

I believe we could all benefit by studying many of their ancient stories

Perhaps enabling a renewed appreciation for all of Earth’s life to unfurl

Our resident woodchuck, good old Woody,

Just came out, and did not see his shadow;

So today, I’m really hoping and praying,

That very soon, Old Man Winter, will go.

PS:  Punxsutawney Phil

Did See His Shadow,

But I Trust Woody.

I know I'm a few days late, but today, in Portland, Oregon it is sunny and in the high 40's... spring is around the corner

Cheers,
Dan

We are already in February, so winter´s days are numbered. Love the way you dig into the ancient american legends and treasures. Thanks dear friend, ED.

Kate beat me to the Kojak joke. This winter with its snow and gloom day in day out feels like the film, Groundhog day. Peter Pan found his shadow...

... Wodjak... is he related to Kojak?! i can see various facial similarities, but the hair's all wrong... maybe he had transplants and that scared his shadow away!? But Yippeee if winter is over and gone... he can come round my place and say the same thing ANYTIME... and I promise not to lock him in the broom cupboard to prevent his shadow from appearing. Strange thing, all this lore... why a Kojak and why HIS shadow? Would it be the same if, say, you were standing next to him and YOUR shadow didn't appear? Thanks for reminding me about this, Dad... when i saw it in me diary i thought it had something to do with an ageing rock band... xx

WISH I COULD GET A 'WOODY' !!! TOMKAT ...

It was cloudy in Punxsatawney, PA. With all the bright lights from cameras, how could Phil not have seen his shadow? It's a conspiracy, I tell ya! I'm hoping for an early Spring, too, sooo tired of Winter's cold ...

(((HUGS))) and love (and Happy Wodjak Day), Karla.
