We have decimated his eastern home
So, the Barred Owl, has migrated west
He’s now multiplying, on the west coast
Plans are in the works, to kill him with zest
Alas, the Barred Owl has invaded another owl’s home
The endangered Spotted Owl, is in a life-ending decline
They are both now trying to survive, in northwest forests
And bureaucratic plans to kill Barred Owls, many say is fine
This horrific plan was first hatched by the Bush Administration
As a ploy to distract attention, and to protect, the logging industry
“Hey! It’s not accelerating deforestation that’s killing Spotted Owls,
It’s these damned old invading eastern Barred Owls; why can’t you see?!”
And now, as the timber industry, decimates remaining western forests
And the dying Spotted Owl, draws ever closer to extinction, in our nation
God forbid that we human beings admit any fault at all, for our perishing planet
Plans are once again now being finalized, to shoot down Barred Owls, with elation
Federal agencies and bureaucratic buffoons are now, once again, proposing that we kill Barred Owls now found in the Pacific Northwest, where they are invading remaining old-growth forests that were once the exclusive haunt of their closely related, but now almost extinct, Spotted Owl cousins.
Forget the fact that we’re very rapidly killing off the remaining food sources for both of these owls; forget the fact that we’re now rapidly chopping down our remaining western forests, as we did those in the east; and forget the fact that all of this, is our doing, not theirs.
Hell, let’s just blame these damned Barred Owls, and let’s blast them out of the remaining trees. Yeah, that’s the ticket; and they say Shotguns will be the preferred weapon of carnage.
But I very sadly wonder, when this horrific owl blasting frenzy begins, how many blood-thirsty owl hunters will even be able to tell the difference between the Spotted and the Barred – and how many of them, will even care.
The politicians up in British Columbia are taking a different approach,
They want to capture and imprison their very last Spotted Owls, in a zoo;
“Hey, Good News! Now, we can chop down all of our remaining forests,
And, Look at This! We compassionately saved our very last dozen, for you.”
We human beings also now blame the Wolf,
For the now rapidly declining Elk, and Caribou;
And, we are now even blaming Dolphins and Seals,
Who are daring to consume ‘our’ vanishing Fish, too.
“When you cease to exist,
Then who will you blame?”
