I’ll never forget the day that I saw them
They were happily frolicking, in the bay
Back in the 1980s, there were over 1,300
There are less than 300 remaining, today
They are Alaskan Cook Inlet Beluga Whales
Politicians like Sarah Palin, want them all gone
So that more gas, and oil, and coal mining interests
Can conduct business, without being accused of wrong
As Governor of Alaska, Palin sued the federal government
Attempting to get these whales removed from the endangered list
“Oh, heck, all the animals we have here in Alaska, are just fine;
Our wolves, and bears, and belugas don’t need protection like this.”
Many politicians and powerful lobbyists, are now against them
Also wanting their ‘Endangered Species’ status, to be removed
If they no longer have to worry about wildlife, or the environment
It’s much easier to exploit resources, and make profit margins move
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
Has proposed designating more than 3,000 square miles of ocean
As a ‘Critical Habitat,’ for these remaining 300 Cook Inlet Belugas
But this will curtail enormous profit – so many want this plan to end
And, these 300 remaining Belugas are representative of all wildlife
Instead of saving them, so many now want them gone, forever more
You can sign a petition, until March 3rd, on behalf of these last Belugas
Or, you can sit back, and do nothing, as they approach Extinction’s Door
