“If I keep a green bough

In my heart,

The singing bird will come.”

A Chinese Proverb

A tiny messenger just came calling

At my backyard bird feeding station

And, he delightfully brought with him

Memories filled with sunny warm elation

He very merrily called out, as if to remind me

Of the many warm sunny days that I have spent

Wandering through the meadows and the forests

Eagerly following the lyrical trail that he has sent

There is nothing quite as exhilarating

As embarking on a stroll in the wood

And suddenly, hearing him calling out

As only this tiny feathered friend could

“Chick-a-dee-dee-dee!”

Is his very merry song

“Come and follow me!”

It never takes me very long

I soon forget about my earthly problems

As I now eagerly traipse right after him

He truly seems to enjoy this game of tag

As he now flutters above me in the wind

My tiny winged friend acts as a nucleus

Who brings all we forest lovers together

We all seem comforted by his presence

And, he always ushers in sunny weather

He is brave, and playful, and smart

A most wondrous feathered creature

And, keeping all living beings, joyous

Seems to be his divinely given feature

His merry “Chick-a-dee-dee-dee!”

Is a song, I hold dear to my heart

And now, as soon as I possibly can

I always follow after it, like a dart

“I promise that I’ll come follow you, today!”

I soon shout out to my tiny feathered friend

And, he nods his tiny head before departing

As if this sunny little creature comprehends

And as if by magic, as soon as he departed,

The snowfall stopped, and out came the sun;

I’ll probably follow him, through the woods,

And walk quite a ways, before this day is done.

"He" may have been "down here" recently - I had a bunch at my feeder (may be Carolina Chickadees but similar) So he is bringing you our sunny weather AND speaking of messengers: the Robins just arrived on my lawns the other day. A whole big flock with many fat, red-breasted males and thinner drab females. A sign of spring here, as they always pass through in February and don't stay but a week. Still, I felt sorry for them, just hopping along eying the ground in search of food that I feel (after the freezes) may not be there. I don't see them getting any worms But I pulled a tick out of one of the outdoor cats today, so freeze or not, Nature is still "at work"! I keep you posted on spring's creep north!

St John of the Cross wrote: I was sad one day and went for a walk; I sat in a field. A rabbit noticed my condition and came near. It often does not take more than that to help at time, to just be close to creatures who are full of knowing, so full of love.

"As if this sunny little creature comprehends" It is my belief that nature knows who loves her. Ed, this is a very good, timely write.

Nicely done, it reminds me of a few lines from a Robert Frost poem.

Beautiful Ed. If you don't mind me adding a little humor. This reminds me of a poem we used to recite as kids. "Spring has sprung. The grass has riz. I wonder where the birdies is!

Oh well, we loved it as kids.
