My Second Poem in Celebration

Of Our Wondrous Wildlife,

This ‘National Wildlife Week’

“Never lose an opportunity to see anything that is beautiful.

It is God's handwriting - a wayside sacrament.

Welcome it in every fair face, fair sky, and fair flower.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Every once in awhile

I find myself reflecting

On wonders I have seen

And on life’s many blessings

And each and every time that I do

I envision this Ghost of the Wood

I was fortunate to encounter him once

To me, he represents all of nature’s good

Several years have now passed, since I saw him

But in my mind, it somehow seems like yesterday

The magical moment I spied the Ghost of the Wood

I was traipsing in the woods, one snowy winter’s day

There he so silently perched, upon the trail

Our eyes locked, and we were frozen in time

Of course, we didn’t actually speak any words

But for me, it was an encounter wondrously sublime

The Ghost of the Wood is one of Earth’s Endangered

No one really knows how many like him, still survive

He is an extremely solitary resident of the deep forest

And, he needs the great northern wood to remain alive

But my encounter with this Ghost of the Wood

That extremely magical and snowy winter’s day

Truly made me realize that Earth belongs to many

Seeing this seldom seen creature, changed my ways

Since that life-affirming day on the wooded trail

I have been able to fully appreciate all of God’s gifts

Whether they are a tiny field mouse, a bird, or a rabbit

Encountering any free and wild being fills me with bliss

And this Wildlife Week, I thank God for this encounter

The Ghost of the Wood, he still haunts my thoughts today

I believe that just spotting this very elusive Canadian Lynx

Has made me appreciate all of Earth’s life, in so many ways

I felt this way on a much smaller scale when I encountered a deer at night in my driveway. Thanks for sharing this incredible experience.

Great story. Thanks. You know once I was 8 miles down at lonely Sims Pond in Vermont near my sisters. It too was a winter's day (in the 80's) and I also startled a "fish hunter cat" (can't remember the scientific name) climbing down a tree. We were literal frozen in stares for a full minute. Then he just calmly went his way while I didn't move! It really is an eerie feeling to encounter the wild in their true home: wilderness... so little of it left

Yes sadly both lynx and bobcat are so rare here in Canada even that when one is spotted it is like a rare tresure being discovered.

Around here it is called Gaupe, very shy, but as man invade deeper and deeper its habitat, it was forced to cross man's path and few have been killed by cars. My great-grandchildren can see it at the zoo, until the day the zoo runs out of money...
