My Fourth Poem in Celebration
Of Earth’s Wondrous Wildlife,
This ‘National Wildlife Week’
“In the water, they have become the dominant species,
Although they acknowledge minds other than their own.”
Heathcote Williams
My job had been driving me crazy
I had really needed to get away
Soon, I found myself in Alaska
On a truly magical summer’s day
The scenery here, was spectacular
The air, extremely vibrant and clear
One of Earth’s last, pristine, refuges
A place and time I’ll always hold dear
And very soon, I was aboard a fishing boat
Joyously cruising, a marvelous Alaskan bay
As our old Captain prepared the fishing gear
Up from the depths it sprang, massive and gray
I quickly raced to the side of our small vessel
It had surfaced, directly next to our tiny boat
It was a wondrous, gigantic, humpback whale
And now, right here, alongside me, it did float
I very excitedly reached out, and touched its huge back
What an extraordinary and wondrous experience for me
Two far different beings, from two far different worlds
An electrifying connection, which had filled me with glee
And suddenly, this magnificent leviathan from the deep
Slowly looked straight up at me, with its enormous left eye
Without speaking a single word, we had now communicated
And this moment will remain with me, until the day that I die
As I stood there transfixed, now watching him vanish
Beneath the deep and frigid waters of the Alaskan coast
I soon thanked God, for this truly marvelous opportunity
For this truly magical moment, that I still treasure the most
And although several years have passed since I saw him
I always think of this whale, whenever I now visit the sea
And, as I now silently gaze out at the deep blue ocean water
I often wonder, if this wondrous old whale, ever thinks, of me
