They had first met 17 years ago
It was surely ‘Love at First Sight’
And now, every Spring and Summer
They still cuddle together in the moonlight
She has been named Malena
Her mate has been named Rodan
And, theirs is a wondrous love story
Their time together, so magically grand
She was wounded by a rifle
So many, long, years ago
Sadly, she can no longer fly
But her mate, still loves her so
Over the last 17 years
They’ve had 32 offspring
As Malena lovingly watches
Rodan teaches them ‘to wing’
Every Spring and Summer
They are always, still, together
Sadness comes, for both of them
When Autumn brings cold weather
Rodan must follow his instincts
And, he must migrate 8,000 miles
Malena, she remains on her rooftop
Facing Winter’s many cold harsh trials
And every Spring, for the past 17 years
Rodan has returned to the love of his life
Winging his way back to her, 8,000 miles
Yearning once again, to see his Stork wife
And, so amazingly, for the past 17 long years
He’s arrived at Malena’s side, on the same day
But this year, Rodan showed up a few days early
Their everlasting love so wondrous, in so many ways
Making the arduous journey back from South Africa to Croatia each and every Spring, this male Stork named Rodan travels 13,000 km (8,000 miles) to be with his beloved female partner, Malena, who is disabled and unable to accompany him.
Local residents in the small village of Slavonski Brod in Croatia thought that crippled Malena would surely perish when she was shot by a hunter way back in 1993. But thanks to the kindhearted Vokic family, whose roof she still lives on, and to her extremely steadfast and faithful partner, Rodan, she has managed to survive on that rooftop for the past 17 long years.
