My spouse and I just watched a movie
About a canine, with unconditional love
This movie was based on an epic true story
About a dog memorialized in the statue above
This faithful dog’s name was Hachiko
An Akita, born in Japan, in the year 1924
Who so loved his master, a university professor
Each morning, he’d see him off, at the front door
And, each and every evening, in this Japanese town
Hachiko would so faithfully wait, at the train station
Until he saw his master, emerging from the platform
His heart and soul, then filled, with such utter elation
Tragically, one day, his human didn’t come back on that train
He had suffered a massive stroke at work; he wouldn’t return
Faithful old Hachiko had to be dragged away from the station
To see his master once again, how dedicated Hachiko yearned
He was given to another family, but he soon ran away from them
And now, he would be seen, at that train station, every single day
Waiting, and hoping, with every single ounce of his canine essence
Loyally waiting there for his human, in the snow, and heat, and rain
Faithful Hachiko now became a well known sight at that train station
Commuters would talk to him, and some would offer him some food
Old Hachiko remained at his train station post, for over nine long years
When he finally passed away, many were now in a very saddened mood
A Bronze Statue of Faithful Old Hachiko was erected at the train station
Today, 75 years later, many in that Japanese town, still revere his loyalty
Hachiko, the Faithful Canine, is yet another remarkable example to us all
That we should treat Man’s Best Friend, with admiration, love, and dignity
The movie is called: ‘Hachi, A Dog’s Tale,’
It was ‘Americanized,’ starring Richard Gere;
It is a powerful reminder of unconditional love,
My spouse and I both shed some dog loving tears.
