“Once, long, long ago,

Before we two leggeds walked the Earth,

There were no stars in the night sky,

And there was no moon.

So Coyote went to the Great Spirit,

To ask for His assistance.

He was touched by Coyote’s request,

And He created the stars and the moon,

Allowing Coyote, to now hunt at night.”

From A Native American Story

I see him when I wander at night

Out there, crying up to the moon

And his song, it touches my heart

It’s such a sad and mournful tune

Today, we trap and we poison his kind

We humans also hold ‘Kill Coyote Derbies’

Once, so very long ago, Earth belonged to him

I wonder if he remembers through ancient memory

We have also now killed off most of his natural prey

So today, he is forced to hunt our pets, to feed his family

I know he’d much rather return to the days of his ancestors

When his kind could roam wherever they wanted to, so free

Some nights, he will even follow my dogs and I, as we walk about

On those nights, I always wish that there was something I could do

Whenever I hear this hungry and all alone Coyote, howling in the night

I sadly feel like howling along with him, and it always gives me the blues

Full Moon returns this Saturday,

And I know I will hear him howling;

What the Great Spirit gave to the Earth,

Mankind no longer appreciates these things.

I see him when I wander at night,

Out there, crying up to the moon;

And his song, it touches my heart,

It’s such a sad and mournful tune.

Very misunderstood. Maybe we need a few "idiot derbies" Patrick

though it scares me to hear them howl when I did hear them, it was only a fear of their unknown world. I wish I could be closer to nature and enjoy it more

.... and PROGRESS wins again. Guess there's always a little give and take. (Mostly take.) But, if we could, how many of us would trade places with our grand parents? Not many, I'd wager.

Bravo Mr. Ed, well said. Dick

Very beautiful write, Ed! Unfortunately for coyotes in Nova Scotia, Canada, they now have a bounty on their heads because they've been attacking people. The sad thing is cities have grown into the countryside that used to be the coyote's domain, yet somehow it's the coyote's fault this is happening....

...and people said that we should eat more lamb, because a million coyotes can't be wrong! (just to put a twist of humor to an humorless mankind bend on destroying the little we have left)
