“Memory is a way of holding on,

To the things that you love,

The things that you are,

The things you never want to lose.”

Kevin Arnold

A frightened, runaway dog;

A train whistle, in the night;

Memories, from my childhood;

I found them all here, at first light.

I had received another phone call

Another dog had run off, in terror

Another victim of July 4th fireworks

People were out searching, everywhere

For some reason, I soon headed for the old railroad tracks

I had heard of other runaways, crouching in the bushes here

As I peered into the darkness, I heard a distant train whistle

And a flood of old memories came, with that sound in my ears

Suddenly, I was a young child again, at my grandfather’s house

He had lived near some old railroad tracks, in the heart of the city

His old dog Tiko and I had often wandered off together, into the night

And, we often found ourselves sitting in an old freight boxcar, with glee

I recalled how old Tiko and I, would sit there on that train, in the dark

Dreaming of riding it together, to some very exotic and faraway landscape

But when that old freight would begin to move, we would lose our courage

Jump off, and race back to grandpa’s house, dreaming about our Great Escape

Suddenly, I saw some movement in the bushes, as this night train drew near

And a frightened old dog that looked a lot like old Tiko, now came into view

I managed to get a leash on him, and I convinced him to come away with me

He’s now safe, back at his home, and I have night train memories, that are new

Ever since my childhood days at my grandfather’s house,

I’ve imagined when I die, a night train will whisk me away;

Hopefully, to some very exotic and faraway, heavenly place,

Where perhaps, Grandpa, Tiko, and I, will meet again, one day.

A frightened, runaway dog;

A train whistle, in the night;

Memories, from my childhood;

I found them all here, at first light.

My dog, Casey is the same...fireworks and thunder storms frighten her to death. Am happy that the dog is back home!

This is indeed a masterpiece that not only sings with memories and compassion but also offers a good lesson for dog owners...explosions are twice as loud for pets and firework displays are really loud.

Poor dogs, I know Rufuz never liked fireworks and thunder either, he would always jump up on my bed and get real close to me to let me put my hands over his ears...it was the best I could do for him at the time...geez, I miss him more and more each and every day...ed

Loved this, Ed! Wonderful imagery of a childhood memory...sad about the poor dogs and the fireworks. My little dog is terrified too, so we NEVER take her with us. WE close all of the windows in the house to minimize the noise for her.

It makes me remember of a few dreams in childhood about my foot getting caught in the railroad switch as the freight is coming...I know what that poor dog was feeling at the time...
