Inspired By My Favorite Time of Day,

And Lew Duffey’s Poem – ‘Take a Walk’

“An early morning walk,

Is a blessing,

For the entire day.”

Henry David Thoreau

A beam of sunlight peeks

Across the vast summer sky

I hear a bird’s ‘Ode to Dawn’

What an absolute joy it is to rise

I crank open our bedroom window

Early morning air, so fresh and clean

A brand new day, to enjoy all of nature

So many wondrous sights, yet to be seen

With two of my canines by my side

I very eagerly rush out our back door

To an early morning songbird symphony

I simply cannot wait, to experience more

As the sunlight now quickly approaches

So many wonders unfold, before our eyes

My canines joyously begin to romp and play

I gaze skyward, marveling at the morning sky

An early morning robin so merrily sings out

As I watch a very industrious black ant crawl

A hard working woodpecker thumps on wood

A tiny chipmunk so cheerfully calls out to us all

We find ourselves down by the water

Standing on a rickety old wooden dock

My two eager dogs jump right in, as do I

What an eye-opening, life-affirming, shock

A breakfast hunting painted turtle

And a brightly colored mallard glide by

A very industrious mother osprey is fishing

A magnificent hawk soars overhead in the sky

The loons are already very happily swimming

A raucous old black crow caws out, in utter joy

I skip rocks across the calm, green, lake surface

Feeling just as I did years before, as a young boy

Purple wildflowers, are now in bloom along the shore

So I stop to pick a fresh bouquet of them, for my wife

Then my dogs and I continue on our early morning walk

Observing all this wondrous, early morning, god-given life

An early morning walk,

Truly is a blessing,

For the entire day.

I love it all, from the first beam of sunlight to the loons and purple wildflowers. I too need my early morning walk for my day to feel right. . . and "canines by my side" and crows too!
