Imagine living in a small plexi-glass cage
So lonely, day after day, always the same
Never experiencing the company of others
Never being loved, never playing, only pain
Imagine being used as a laboratory guinea pig
Poked and prodded, with chemicals and drugs
Imagine, waiting to die, after months of torture
Never experiencing a kind word, a pat, or a hug
Now imagine, after all hope, has left your heart
Suddenly, being whisked out of your hellish prison
Being talked to, fussed over, allowed to walk around
Attempting to comprehend that your re-birth, has begun
These were the experiences of 118 lab-imprisoned beagles
Who were given a new chance at life, this Independence Day
They’ve been rescued, from their laboratory cages in New Jersey
And with their re-birth, they will learn about love, and how to play
Their newly found freedom came this past Fourth of July weekend after numerous animal welfare groups pushed very hard for quick resolution; they had learned weeks earlier that a New Jersey research facility where these dogs were imprisoned had gone bankrupt and locked its doors.
After legal machinations, St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison, N.J., got 30 of these dogs to prepare for adoption; Pets Alive Animal Sanctuary in Middletown, N.Y. got 88 of them.
And both of these receiving groups got some much needed help. Best Friends Animal Society, the Kanab, Utah Sanctuary, flew in a couple of staff people to help Pets Alive manage the temporary housing, and pay for the feeding and medical care of its 88 new charges. And St. Hubert's partnered with three nearby animal groups to provide soft landing spots for its 30.
The first time these dogs saw actual sunlight was a very stunning moment for them. And most of them were extremely tentative about walking on soft green grass, never having stepped on anything so marvelous before. And, all the new human faces with all the kind words and the outstretched arms? Very mystifying for them, indeed.
But dogs being dogs, most of them are already transitioning very quickly from their pitiful, hopeless existence to exuberant enthusiasm for all the brand new possibilities now being presented to them in their brand new lives.
And, some of them, have already been adopted, into loving new homes.

Yup, I kinda understand this. I think we are lucky the with the RSPA as most pets find new homes. But I need to update. They sure could do with a poet like you on these isles.

I have watched the show, "The Dog Whisperer" from time to time, and know that when those dogs are rescued, they have very low self-esteem. They didn't know and didn't want to play because no one had ever played with them before. But animals live for the moment, if we give them love and care and play with them, they can become happy beings very quickly. I'm so glad those dogs are rescued!!
