Families have lost, their livelihoods
Thousands of birds, are already dead
Oil-mired sea turtles, now facing extinction
And for Gulf pets, very abysmal days are ahead
They are again being abandoned, along the Gulf
They are once again, very sadly, being left behind
So many families, can no longer afford to keep them
Like Katrina, this oil spill’s been horrendously unkind
But unlike Katrina, there is now nowhere for them to go
After the hurricane, we shipped pets, all across the states
Animal shelters in other parts of the country accepted them
Thousands found homes, far from the Gulf, which was great
But today, America’s pets are now being abandoned, everywhere
Our abysmal economy, has America’s animal shelters over capacity
Please find it in your heart to help America’s latest homeless animals
If many in our nation did that, we could curtail this latest pet tragedy
Many of my neighbors compassionately took in Katrina survivors
I, myself, five years later, have been blessed, with three of them
But today, I sadly see so many, still buying pets at the pet store
America’s penchant to support abysmal puppy mills, never ends
Now is the time to adopt a shelter pet, to make room for another
Now is the time to donate time, funds, and direly needed supplies
Now is the time to once again, help those who are innocent victims
The numbers are again overwhelming, but we owe it to them, to try
“Not to hurt our humble brethren (the animals),
Is our first duty to them, but to stop there, is not enough.
“We have a much higher mission—
To be of service to them, whenever they require it.”
