And my wish was to bring them home,
And give them the best life I can.

It was an unforgettable night last February
For some of our U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan
When a suicide bomber arrived at their barracks
And three strays they had befriended, foiled his plan
The three heroic dogs named Rufus, Target, and Sasha
Immediately sprang into action, attacking this madman
Forcing him to detonate his bomb, in the barracks entry
Saving the lives of numerous U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan
Five soldiers sustained injuries that night, but none were killed
Rufus and Target were wounded, brave Sasha died in the attack
All of these soldiers were now extremely grateful to these dogs
And Sgt. Duke now wanted to bring both Rufus and Target back
Thankfully, help to accomplish his compassionate mission was available
Through a program called ‘A Warrior’s Wish’ for wounded servicemen
Duke and Rufus had become best friends, until he returned home in March
And now, with the assistance of many, their separation was coming to an end
Last Thursday, at an Atlanta airport, a grand homecoming took place
Sgt. Duke was waiting to welcome both Rufus and Target to the U.S.
He is adopting heroic Rufus, and a fellow comrade is adopting Target
And I wish both these valiant soldiers and these heroic dogs, all the best
What a marvelous reunion it must have been when soldier and dogs saw each other again, and had their long awaited face-to-face nuzzles.
Duke immediately started feeling Rufus’ back for telltale evidence of his injuries. “He was tore up pretty bad there on his back,” he explained.
Then he laughed, “He’s so much cleaner than I ever saw him. He’d never had a bath before. But he still looks pretty skinny.
“We’re definitely going to fatten him up.”
And then Sgt. Duke joyously marched out of the airport terminal with one heroic dog on each side of him, both canines now sporting red, white, and blue collars to signify their new lives, and their new homes.
