More than 300 sightings of the legendary Jersey Devil have been reported in the last 300 years, mostly in the Pine Barrens region of New Jersey. And, just last month, a very strange character bearing a striking resemblance to this infamous Devil was observed near Sea Isle, N.J., wading in the ocean, in the nude.
There are many possible origins of this fascinating legend. The earliest ones date back to Native American folklore. The Lenape Indians called the area around the Pine Barrens ‘Popuessing’ - meaning ‘Place of the Dragon.’
Early Swedish explorers named this same area ‘Drake Kill’ - ‘Drake’ being a Swedish word for dragon, and ‘Kill’ meaning channel or arm of the sea.
Our dear old Brother Edvard may have actually been one of those early Swedish explorers.
And many modern day rumors and stories have attributed this unusual being to scientific experiments gone bad at a secret government laboratory, or to an extremely rare winged turtle.
But the most accepted origin of the Jersey Devil as far as our family is concerned started with our own dear old Mother Ed, and is as follows:
It was said that Ma Ed had three extremely weird children (Old Edvard, Tiger Lily Ed, and Pee Wee Ed), and after giving birth to Pee Wee, she proclaimed that if she had one more weird kid, it would surely be the devil himself – The Jersey Devil, that is.
