Not a Born In The Wild Feral,
Another Throw-Away Cat;
People Abandon Their Pets,
It’s A Sad, Horrendous Fact.
He materializes every evening
On my front steps, after dark
A grey, forlorn, furry shadow
Who was dumped in the park
He must have been attracted here
By my cats perched in the window
How old, or where he comes from
I doubt that I will ever really know
As I perch in my recliner after the sun goes down
Our feline, Flower, lets me know that he’s arrived
I open up my front door, and there he now perches
Hunger, and sadness, and loneliness, in his cat eyes
He very patiently waits, as I fetch him some supper
He so very silently watches, as I fill his food bowl
While my night visitor, now so very gratefully dines
I sit in the cold autumn night with this discarded soul
He no longer rushes off in terror, when I approach him
But he doesn’t trust me enough yet, to linger here long
After he dines, he thanks me with a grateful feline look
I whisper “See you tomorrow, Shadow,” and he’s gone
I don’t know if this outcast, will ever completely trust me
But I do know, that he will always be welcome, at our door
If one night, he decides that he wants to stay with us forever
He will be welcome; Shadow won’t have to wander, anymore
All of our pets were throw-aways,
There are so many out there today;
We human beings are so heartless,
Our cruelty is increasing every day.
He materializes every evening,
On my front steps, after dark;
A grey, forlorn, furry shadow,
Who was dumped in the park.
