It was just about first light
When I heard a merry bird sing
I wearily sat up, rubbing my eyes
Wondering what today would bring
Suddenly three dogs licked my face
And, four of my cats began to purr
I got up and I let all of the dogs out
Wandering into the kitchen in a blur
I wearily began making a pot of coffee
And, I absentmindedly turned on the TV
I heard someone say ‘It’s World Hello Day’
Which sounded like a marvelous idea to me
“You are supposed to say Hello to Ten People,
Today, this November 21st, on World Hello Day.”
I rushed back into the bedroom, to say Hi to my wife
She sat up, looked at the clock, and yelled, “Go Away!”
But my enthusiasm was still building, so I now got dressed
And soon, I found myself wandering down the dark street
I was very determined to say “Hello!” to nine more people
But reactions I very quickly got, soon filled me with defeat
The young paperboy quickly gave me the finger
A neighbor fetching his paper, rudely ignored me
A woman heading to church, gave me a nasty glare
And I was greeted with expletives, by the next three
My last three attempts to say ‘Hello’ also ended in failure
So I eventually headed back on home, and back into my yard
Thankfully, all of my dogs were extremely glad to greet me again
And as the birds chirped, I decided ‘World Hello Day’ was too hard
But ‘Hello’ anyway, to anyone reading this today;
And Thank God For Pets and Merry Little Birds…
