Thinking about the past year
And the orphans that I’ve met
So many, abandoned and abused
Far too many, so sadly homeless yet
Dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and guinea pigs
So many of them, purchased at some pet store
Then tossed out, like a worthless piece of garbage
This past year so horrendous, finding more and more
Almost every day last year, another extremely sad news item
About another cat and her kittens, tossed out of someone’s car
Or another telephone call, concerning a starving, dying, canine
Tortured by dog fighters, then discarded, bleeding, and scarred
Dogs that should be man’s best friend, so terrified
Un-spayed cats, unable to find food for their babies
Rabbits, birds, and guinea pigs, freezing in dark alleys
Because we human beings are so cruel, callous, and lazy
I can’t even count the number of abandoned pets found last year
And, I very sadly know, that this new year, we’ll find many more
Please help us, to help some of them, in these abysmally cruel times
Please consider adopting an orphan - they are right outside your door
Thinking about the past year,
And the orphans that I’ve met;
So many, abandoned and abused,
Far too many, so sadly homeless yet.
On This Extremely Frigid New Year’s Morning,
I Hope and Pray For a Better Year, For Them;
Our Human Cruelty, Callousness, and Neglect,
So Very Sadly, Just Never Seems, To Ever End.
