“Who can believe there is no soul,
Behind those luminous eyes.”
Theophile Gautier
Music: Needing A Friend
The new year has not started very well
For Earth’s wild creatures, or for pets
So many tortured animals are out there
And, this is one of the saddest tales yet
I was returning home, just yesterday
When I spotted something up ahead
Was this a dog, a coyote, or a wolf
I couldn’t tell if it was alive or dead
I stopped my truck, and I jumped out
I approached this creature, lying there
Two extremely sad eyes now met mine
For a moment, all I could do was stare
What had once been, a beautiful Husky
Was now, a ragged heap of bone and fur
Attached to his neck, two heavy iron chains
His emaciated body, was covered with burrs
He was so weak, he could no longer stand erect
The first thing I did, was free him from his chains
I could tell by his eyes, that he was about to give up
They morosely stared up at mine, I could feel his pain
I gave this tormented, dying dog some fresh water
He very weakly and very gratefully, lapped it all up
He whimpered softly, and he began licking my hand
As I gently picked him up and placed him in my truck
As I now quickly drove to the closest animal hospital
I wondered how far he had dragged those heavy chains
Our eyes locked again, and some tears welled up in mine
No dog in the world, deserved this one’s agony and pain
And now, for the rest of my days, I will always wonder
If some human being without a soul, had left him to die
Or, if he had escaped some truly hellish, chained prison
Either way, I can feel more tears welling up in my eyes
This morning, he's now resting somewhat comfortably at the hospital
Later today, to remove all of the burrs, his fur will have to be shaved
The veterinary staff and I now hope and pray that his nightmare is over
That his emaciated body will heal, and that this canine soul, will be okay

It truly defies comprehension. To treat a fellow creature in such a way in this 'modern age.'
You'd be the shining knight in tin foil over here, with HRH sword. Top going, once again, Ed.
aware people like you. So many seem to feel that we are separate
from nature, rather than part and parcel. Can't hurt one without
hurting the rest, can we. Can't leave an animal -- be it "higher"
or "lower" [which to me is a joke} hurting!!
Good for you for saving the husky. Are beautiful, aren't they?
Sure hope he is going to be all right.
Doesn't bare thinking about the number of abusers who are out there.
Guess we should be surprised when someone is good and kind, rather than the other way around, but I personally find it unbearable to
think that people are inherently bad. Nature can be cruel, but
there is so much beauty. M a g i c.
Sorry, didn't mean to go on & on.
Always,

PS: Saw a red-headed woodpecker about an hour ago. Hear 'im first,

We are so much focused on our selfish human misery, we don't mind causing others the same, even innocent creatures. We have to find a way in law to promote ID systems that feed back to the owner, just as we would do, if you, the police, or coroner, found one of our own like that, maybe dying or dead. Until we see the higher power, we so constantly pray to and beg favours of, as the owner the creator, the very being of and in every creature, we'll miss the mark of getting closer to him and ourselves. Bless you, you sure know him.
