We found many dogs, still clinging to life
In their locked houses, months after Katrina
Lola survived a month, locked in a burned home
An animal’s ‘will to live’ always fills me with awe
A devastating fire destroyed a home, on February 23rd
No one was in it at the time, except a young woman’s pet
Firefighters had assumed that her Dachshund had perished
But one month later, defiant little Lola had not given up yet
A few days ago, the young woman returned to her burned house
As she stood staring at its ash-filled remains, she heard scratching
Her friends quickly helped her tear down the boarded-up front door
She raced inside, and there was Lola, and her owner began weeping
Brave little Lola is now recovering from dehydration and malnutrition
For an entire month, this feisty little canine never gave up, on survival
All sorts of animals have been inspiring me, for just about my entire life
And for the rest of my life, at the lessons they still teach me, I will marvel
We found many dogs, still clinging to life,
In their locked houses, months after Katrina;
Lola survived a month, locked in a burned home,
An animal’s ‘will to live’ always fills me with awe.
And these extremely sad days, so many dogs have lost their homes,
They now languish in animal shelters, desperately wanting to survive;
Perhaps you could find it in your heart, to help just one, with their quest,
Man’s best friend, just like man, still yearns to be loved, and to remain alive.

So glad Lola made it through the ordeal. Bless her and everyone who
helped see that she is home again. Hope she lives a long, deliriously happy life. Her owner is must be so grateful.
