Every time I think I have seen the worst
Along comes far worse, atrocious cruelty
I have been sadly following this dog’s story
Are we God’s children or the Devil’s progeny
And the immense cruelty that I see every day now
Is not taking placing in some Third World Country
It is happening every day now, right here in America
And this abysmal fact, brings such great sadness to me
A woman had chained this dog, inside her apartment
Where she was heartlessly starving him, for a long time
One day, she just decided to stuff him into a garbage bag
Which she tossed down a trash chute, never thinking it a crime
Several days later, as the trash collector emptied the dumpster
He noticed that one of the numerous garbage bags was moving
He contacted an Animal Control Officer who picked up this dog
And soon, to an animal hospital, this dying canine he would bring
The staff at this emergency hospital did not believe this dog would live
But they administered IV fluids, and they covered him with heating pads
They also held him in their arms, attempting to comfort him before he died
The next morning, when he was still alive, they were shocked and very glad
This determined canine has amazed everyone, including the staff at this facility
He is slowly, but surely, making a truly miraculous recovery since that first day
Since he was brought here on St. Patrick’s Day, they have named him ‘Patrick’
But my faith in any inherent goodness of humanity, is now very rapidly, fading away
Every time I think I have seen the worst,
Along comes far worse, atrocious cruelty;
I have been sadly following this dog’s story,
Are we God’s children or the Devil’s progeny?
I thought I had seen one of the worst cases of animal cruelty,
When I found abused, emaciated old Trucker, in that truck yard;
But now, we starve them; then we toss them in the trash, still alive;
Our species has lost its soul; our hearts have grown so cold and hard.
