“Oh, Great Spirit,
Whose very breath gives life to all the world,
Make my hands respect the things You have made,
And make my ears sharp to hear Your voice.
Make me wise so that I may understand the things
That You have taught my people,
And let me learn the lessons You have hidden,
In every leaf, and rock, and animal, and tree.”
A Native American Prayer
Music: Spirit Dance
Ever since my first excursion to the wild
Years ago, when I was a very young boy
I prefer natural vs. man-made cathedrals
They always give me more peace and joy
And there is a place I like to worship
Where the blue waters meet the sky
A place, where tall pines stand vigil
A place, forged so long ago in time
A place, revered by Native Americans
A place, brimming with wondrous beauty
A place, still echoing with ancient wisdom
A place, my nature loving soul finds serenity
I always journey here, in a small fishing boat
And I always hover, outside the arched entrance
Then, I silently paddle inside its limestone doorway
Where I soon develop a ‘traveling back in time’ sense
Soon, I can envision ancient warriors sitting here, in birchbark canoes
Huddled right here praying, and reverently painting, on its stone walls
Etching pictures of this great lake, its magnificent fish, and its wildlife
And in their own devout way, thanking Creator, for the wonder of it all
Ever since my first excursion to the wild,
Years ago, when I was a very young boy;
I prefer natural vs. man-made cathedrals,
They always give me far more peace and joy.
