“The more one gets to know of men,
The more one value’s dogs.”
Alphonse Toussenel
I was feeling kind of down
So I took a walk in the wood
My old pal, Tater, had insisted
Walks with him, are always good
He has this knack of reading my mind
He’s been doing it, for some time now
Good old Tater, he’s a Katrina survivor
And, in tune with my feelings, somehow
Suddenly, old Tater raced on ahead
I soon heard him, barking out to me
And soon, I saw what he had sensed
A canine left to die, tethered to a tree
This dog’s brown eyes, were drenched in sadness
Someone had decided, that this innocent should die
To some human being, he was now, merely garbage
Cowering as I approached, hurt and fear in his eyes
I could see that he was not a very young dog
As I talked to him, and I freed him from that tree
I could sense that Tater was already comforting him
But modern man’s cruelty will remain a mystery to me
I will never understand how some now treat man’s best friend
I will never comprehend how some can be so cruel these days
I’ve already found ‘Woody’ a new home, with a caring person
And I hope that the hurt and betrayal in his eyes will fade away
The more that I get to know of my fellow men,
The more that I appreciate every single canine;
And, the more ashamed that I’ve now become,
Of my own, extremely cruel and callous kind.
We are the only race of beings on Earth,
Who inflict on our neighbors, such hell;
There are now, so many of them out there,
Who urgently need some kindness and help.
We’re finding many abandoned and abused canines,
In foreclosed homes, in alleys, and out in the woods;
We leave them, starve them, and treat them like trash,
Man’s compassion is gone - ‘evil’ has replaced ‘good.’
