On our recent Mud Pup Outing
One of my mutts had caught him
He, too, loves those muddy waters
He, too, had been out for a little swim
And I didn’t even know that he was there
Still lurking, under the back seat, of our car
Junior Dog obviously tired of playing with him
And this poor little critter, had really traveled far
But he did provide me with quite a chuckle
When my spouse spotted him under the seat
“Oh, My God! What the hell is that thing?”
As she jumped out of the car and screeched
“That, my dear, is a marvelous Star-Nosed Mole,
I haven’t seen one since summer camp so long ago;
I used to wade in their lake, searching for pet turtles,
And once in awhile, I’d come across one of these moles.”
“They all love to swim along the bottoms of lakes and ponds,
Feeling all about for food, with that marvelous tentacle nose;
This poor little guy is as blind as a bat, and he’s quite harmless,
And, he is the only mammal that can smell underwater, you know!”
“Thanks for all that information, Mr. Green Jeans, but now what?
You’re not bringing that thing into the house; it is freaking me out!”
“Oh, all right, Scaredy Cat, I’ll get a box, and put him in the garage,
You won’t even know he’s there, since he’s as quiet as a church mouse.”
I’ve been feeding our little Star Stowaway some big, fat, juicy earth worms
He seems content in our garage, but I plan on driving him back to his home
But, on second thought, perhaps I’ll send him to my brother, in New Jersey
‘The Jersey Devil and his sidekick Mole, in the Pine Barrens they can roam!’
They could be quite a team, frightening all the tourists, in the middle of the night;
But I sure hope my brother shares his nightcrawlers with Mole, and treats him right.
These curious little critters can detect whether something is edible, in a flash;
But so can my brother, Jersey Devil Ed, who devours everything, mighty fast.
