It has now been nearly six long years
Since Katrina wreaked her devastation
Yet today, many re-live these horrors
Such tragic river flooding in our nation
As I watch the images on my TV screen
My wind wanders back to New Orleans
So many pets, left to fend for themselves
So many died, in a place so wet and mean
We did manage to rescue thousands of ‘left behinds’
I very thankfully have three of them still living with me
And, because of Katrina, The PETS Act became a law
People are now allowed to evacuate their pets to safety
But there are still far too many animals, fending for themselves
And, several animal welfare organizations are again, helping them
Please find it in your heart, to once again donate to this worthy cause
Please help them to bring this new flood horror, to a compassionate end
Unlike Katrina, pet abandonment today has sadly become a national tragedy
Throughout the nation, so many pets are being forced, to fend for themselves
Animal shelters, throughout our vast nation today, are all overflowing with pets
And now, along the swollen Mississippi, left behind pets, have a brand new hell
In the fall of 2006, because of Katrina, Congress passed H.R. 3858, the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act). This law has enabled many of these current flood victims today to evacuate with their beloved pets.
But far too many animals are still being tragically left behind along the rising Mississippi River flood waters today, and many animal welfare organizations are once again attempting to assist them. And, these organizations once again need our nation’s help.
