I managed to spend some time this past Memorial Day Weekend
Reading about, and thinking about, all the heroes in our country
Besides learning about many heroic men and women in uniform
I read several stories about truly heroic dogs just like Sgt. Stubby
Stubby, a stray Pit Bull, snuck aboard a WWI soldier transport vessel
And soon became the Mascot of the 26th Division of 102nd Infantry
Stubby, with his extremely keen ears and nose, would alert our troops
Of pending gas attacks, giving them time to don their gas masks safely
Valiant and loyal Stubby also quickly became a ‘search and rescue’ hero
Locating, and saving the lives, of many an injured and wounded infantryman
Private Stubby even managed to somehow sniff out an enemy spy among them
The only canine to ever receive a promotion to ‘Sergeant’ in combat in our land
Valiant Little Sgt. Stubby was wounded by a grenade during a fierce battle
Thankfully, he survived, and he made it back home, with his fellow soldiers
Stubby was awarded numerous medals for heroism and for improving morale
He died in 1926, and these words are engraved in stone, where he is interred:
‘Sergeant Stubby,
Hero Dog of WWI,
A Very Brave Stray.’
I met many ‘left behind’ Pit Bulls like Stubby after Katrina,
And the vast majority of them were truly marvelous canines;
Sadly, vicious humans attempt to make these dogs vicious;
Animal Cruelty should be considered a truly heinous crime.

And Remember Always, All of Our Heroes,
Including Man’s (and Soldier’s) Best Friend.
