Old Fashioned Sunset

“Nobody ever talks nowadays

About the beauty of a sunset;

They are quite old fashioned.”

Oscar Wilde

What a truly glorious Fourth of July sunset

As I perched here, on Lake Michigan’s shore

For me, this was the ultimate holiday pastime

Giving me a sense of freedom like never before

There was a time when I watched the huge fireworks shows

There was a time when I celebrated with the holiday crowds

But these days and nights, I seek out old fashioned pleasures

Like watching an old fashioned sunset that is tranquil not loud

As I sat here in solitude, I was transported back through time

Recalling my very first Lake Michigan sunset, when I was a boy

It was a truly marvelous Boy Scout summer camping experience

For a big city kid, the freedom of all this open sky and water, a joy

Those wondrous childhood nature treks had nurtured my nature loving soul

And, I have never forgotten them, although many long years have now past

Most people today have lost an appreciation for a good old fashioned sunset

So I thank God I had the opportunity to forge a love for them, which did last

I believe Oscar Wilde was right,

Sunsets are quite old fashioned;

But I’m an old fashioned soul,

So I’ll watch them until my end.

Your poem is so peaceful and reflective, leaves one feeling enriched for having read your work. I'm with you, just an old fashioned gal who loves nature and all things that are good in life.

The splendour of our sun-up-and-down skies are not to be beat on this earth, Ed. Who needs Hollywood's vain attempts to better when it comes to drama and impact? I deliberately step outside of my own front door each night to take in the sensory delights of the far distant skies upon which I then sleep and dream. That rock you're perched on is gonna get mighty crowded, I can assure you! :)) xx

You are definitely an "OLD" soul & your body is the same...and how did you get a sunset living on the west side of Lake Michigan...? I could understand a sunrise, but...Jerseeeeeeeeeeey

Guess I'm just an old-fashioned girl too, Ed, cause I'd rather be in the arms of mother nature than in any city....besides fireflies make wonderful fireworks! Loved this....left me feeling peaceful and relaxed....
