A Member of ‘The Memorial Squad’
I took a drive out to a place of hallowed ground
Located on a thousand acres of field and forest
Here, there are hundreds and hundreds of graves
Of America’s military veterans – our nation’s finest
This hallowed ground is called ‘Lincoln National Cemetery’
I traveled here, on a lovely warm summer’s day in the country
Gazing upon row upon row of headstones, of America’s bravest
While a serene serenade was being performed by birds in the trees
Suddenly, three rounds of loud gunshots, from seven M-1 rifles
Which were delivering a final tribute, to one of our nation’s best
Then the Bugler in the Memorial Guard, played his mournful ‘Taps’
Yet one more of America’s brave warriors, had now been laid to rest
Although I hadn’t personally known the brave soul being honored, this day
I was very glad that I had been here, while he was given his deserved Adieu
I believe we should always remember, and honor, those who gave us their all
Please visit a veterans’ cemetery to pay your respects, it’s the least we can do

Sadly there will always be a stream of fresh vets to take their places.
Like Rome in ancient times, America is fighting on to many fronts spreading thin it's troops and not really wining any of them.
