Many of us had been hoping and praying
That Katrina had taught us, to respect pets
But I have very sadly received many messages
In Hurricane Irene, we left many of them behind yet
Thousands and thousands of pet owners evacuated
And apparently, many of them still don’t care, today
They left the animals, that look to them for their safety
Not giving them a second thought, as they raced away
Local law enforcement officials, all along Irene’s dire path
Were inundated with calls, about abandoned dogs and cats
In their defense, their priorities were ensuring human safety
One would expect that pet owners by now were aware of that
This particular dog, was abandoned in North Carolina
Many like him, penned outside, and cruelly left behind
Many others, now forlornly left, in flood ravaged towns
In every disaster, I wonder what is wrong, with our kind
And, after every disaster these very sad days, a few compassionate souls
Go out of their way, to round up and rescue callously abandoned animals
If you live on the eastern seaboard, there are many animals in need of help
Please contact pet rescue groups in your area, who attempt to help them all
Many of us had been hoping and praying,

In Hurricane Irene, we left many of them behind yet.
