I’ve marveled at their friendship for years now
This elephant and this canine, the best of friends
Residing at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee
Unconditionally accepting each other, to the end
It was eight years ago now, when Bella had first shown up
A homeless, abandoned canine, in dire need of a new friend
Tarra, the sanctuary’s lead elephant, had quickly welcomed her
For the past eight years, their friendship had grown without end
They were always together, side by side, at the sanctuary
They walked, and played, and even slept there, together
When Bella was hurt, Tarra remained outside her window
Refusing to leave, standing vigil, even in inclement weather
For three weeks while Bella mended, Tarra remained at her post
Sanctuary staff had to carry Bella outside, so Tarra could see her
They visited everyday like that, until Bella could walk once again
The unwavering bond they’d formed, nothing but death could deter
Last Wednesday when Bella vanished, Tarra searched for her
They say when she found her canine friend, killed by coyotes
She carried her back to the compound, and now, is in mourning
Steadfast friends to the end, and such a remarkable lesson for me

“Tarra and Bella’s devoted relationship warmed the hearts of everyone who heard their story. The unlikely duo of an elephant and a dog reminded each of us of the importance of loving one other, despite our differences.
Bella trusted Tarra so completely, she would let the giant elephant stroke her stomach with her foot and caress her with her trunk.
Bella and Tarra found sanctuary here together in the 2,200 acres of The Elephant Sanctuary; swimming in ponds, exploring new paths, and resting side by side in the sunshine.
Tarra's elephant sisters will help her through her grief. Although we cannot take away Tarra's pain immediately, or the pain of all those who knew Bella, we do know that Bella knew true love and true freedom here. It will always be so for animals that find Sanctuary.
Bella, we will miss you and your infectious playfulness, and you will live on forever, in our hearts. Don't worry, we will continue to look after Tarra, just as you looked after each other.”
