Yet another extremely saddening telephone call
About yet another very loyal, left behind, friend
This one, so diligently guarding a boarded up house
Every day now, I wonder if our cruelty will ever end
“She stays on the porch of this abandoned home,
Still defending it for her family, who left her there;
Do you think that you can convince her to leave it,
So many people drive right by, they don’t even care.”
As I pulled up to this abandoned dilapidated old house
She immediately sat bolt upright, and she began to growl
I got out of my truck with some appetizing food and water
I was determined to leave with valiant ‘Defender’ somehow
She very warily observed me as I approached her with the food
She began salivating at its smell; she had not eaten in a long time
I began by tossing her some delectable chunks of juicy cooked meat
This extremely loyal old canine was starving; yet another human crime
After dining very ravenously, she grudgingly allowed me to help her
But I had to pull her into my truck; she did not want to leave her post
As we drove off, she began whining in the back seat of my old vehicle
I think her guilt was enormous, dogs value their extreme loyalty the most
She spent the night in our garage in a cozy warm bed my spouse prepared
But I imagine her sleep was fitful, feeling guilty for having left her guard duty
Now she’s being cared for and being treated for malnutrition at our vet’s office
I’m determined to find her a loving home, and I’m ashamed of modern humanity
