It had sadly not been very long at all
Since I had rescued left behind Carrie
When the same police officer phoned me
“There’s another dog there, can you help me?”
“This one is a tiny, starving, Miniature Pinscher,
A neighbor told me that they left two dogs behind.
I’ve been trying to catch her, but she’s too scared,
I think she misses Carrie; all she does now is whine.”
As I now sadly drove back out to this dreadful place of misery
It was hard to imagine, they had also abandoned this ‘Min Pin’
These ‘designer dogs’ are bought from puppy mills and breeders
With our shelters all overflowing, buying dogs, to me, is also a sin
But no matter how we acquire man’s best friend, the very devoted canine
To me, it’s truly an egregious crime to abandon them whenever we want to
So I’ve been camping out here again, at a place I certainly don’t want to be
To hopefully help this tiny, frightened, starving canine, end its nightmare too
Sadly, tiny Minnie has proven to be more elusive and distrusting than Carrie
She rushes off in the dark whenever I approach and the weather is now frigid
I might have to bring her devoted friend Carrie, back on out here, to assist me
Man’s cruelty knows no bounds today, our total lack of loyalty, an atrocious sin
She’s all by herself,
And I very sadly know,
She doesn’t want to be,
All by herself, anymore,
Out there, in the dark and the cold.
But she doesn’t know how to trust,
Anymore, and I really don’t blame her.

Indeed, no-one can blame her, yet we can blame our selfishness.
A compassionate poem that is just as much connected to humans as animals as so often we too learn to distrust...and all of us part of this interconnected web of life needing to help one another.
