As I Give Thanks, This Thanksgiving,
For All The Magnificent Dogs In My Life,
I Happened To Come Across This Recent Story
“He is loyalty itself. He has taught me the meaning of devotion.
His presence by my side is protection against my fears of dark and unknown things.
He has promised to wait for me... whenever... wherever - in case I may need him.
He is my dog.”

His human friend died over a week ago
And now, he refuses to leave his grave
How many of us can say we are as loyal
As steadfast in our love for another or brave
The news reports simply call him ‘Yellow Dog’
His master and friend, a poor single rural resident
They shared a room together, in a village in China
Yellow Dog’s unconditional love, so very evident
This dog’s loyalty has touched the hearts of local residents
They are leaving food and water, at his master’s gravesite
They also now plan to build a shelter there, for Yellow Dog
Who they now know will remain at this grave, day and night
The love and loyalty of Man’s Best Friend is truly amazing
Yet so many human beings today break this bond and loyalty
So many dogs are being abandoned by their human caretakers
While canines like Yellow Dog, continue to teach and inspire me
Throughout mankind’s history, there have been stories about a canine’s vigil
At the resting places of their human friends, like Scotland’s Greyfriars Bobby
This extremely loyal dog remained at his master’s gravesite, for fourteen years
As did an Akita in Japan named Hachiko, who stood vigil, until his own passing
Yellow Dog’s friend died over a week ago,
And he steadfastly refuses to leave his grave;
How many of us can say that we are as loyal,
Or as steadfast in our love for another, or as brave.
