I used to think that Hurricane Katrina
Would be the worst pet tragedy I’d see
But today, in the United States of America
We now abandon them, from sea to shining sea
We, as a nation, are now throwing out our dogs, like the trash
We are very cruelly leaving them behind, to fend for themselves
We’re now dumping them in cities, towns, parks, and rural areas
We, as a nation, are now putting Man’s Best Friend, through hell
About 50,000 abandoned canines, now wander Detroit
Hundreds of starving left behind canines now in Houston
In Chicago, we are sadly finding, more and more of them
National compassion gone; national pet abandonment begun
Out on the west coast in California, not very many days ago
Seven tiny Shepherd puppies, were dumped at a trash heap
All seven were starving, dehydrated, and infested with fleas
Our once steadfast bond with canines, so many no longer keep
My recent rescue of sweet Carrie from a foreclosed home

Kelle Mann Davis and a small posse of volunteers are digging deep into their own pockets right now to pay for the gas money, the dog food, the traps, and the veterinary care for these abandoned, starving dogs down in Houston, that now horridly measure in the hundreds. While most of us were at home enjoying our Thanksgiving dinners with our families, these valiant volunteers were out on the streets of Houston, feeding these forgotten dogs. Both Ellen and Oprah have had shows about America's homeless dogs. Ellen's dog food company donates tons of dog food to our overflowing shelters, and Oprah says: Adopt - Don't Shop. Yet, scores of people still purchase their dogs, at exorbitant prices, from breeders, pet stores, and puppy mills. And so very sadly today, people now throw out and leave behind these 'pedigreed' dogs, too.
