They so sadly seem to keep coming these days
Abandoned, left behind pets, now everywhere
All these two orphans have now, is each other
And, they are now, such a sad and lonely pair
They were found wandering together in the city
Hungry, cold, and abandoned by their family
No tags, no microchips, no I.D.s of any kind
Two of the saddest dogs that I’ve ever seen
I now gaze into their sad, dejected, forlorn faces
They remind me of all those Katrina left behinds
I once thought, I’d never see such sadness again
But I was wrong, often today, I wish I were blind
I now get call after call, about another homeless dog
Or a dog and a cat, left behind, in a foreclosed home
Or a pair of bonded pets, like these two miserable dogs
And my tears today, for them, cascade down these poems
Animal rescuers like myself, all across America, are dejected
Because we cannot get enough people to adopt these orphans
If we take them to an overflowing shelter, they’ll be put down
We wish we didn’t love animals so much, our misery never ends
These two sad homeless orphans have done absolutely nothing wrong
Yet, in their canine minds, they must very sadly believe, that it’s them
If you have any compassion left at all, for today’s numerous left behinds
Head for your local shelter, before another innocent’s life, comes to an end
And Yes, many so called 'No-Kill' animal shelters,
Are also now being forced to put these animals down;
The sheer volume of abandoned pets, is now atrocious,
And not nearly enough adopters or donors, can be found.

You always break my heart but it is so sadly true. I just end up keeping my animals I can't give away. But I'm sure with a heart like yours and your love, there would be too many. May God go with you and all our furry friends. May they one day find happiness.
