“It is not so much for its beauty

That the forest makes a claim upon men’s hearts,

As for that subtle something, that quality of air,

That emanation from old trees,

That so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.”

Robert Louis Stevenson

I awaken before dawn

Feeling, restless and blue

I realize, that I need a walk

For my waning spirit to renew

So, I very quickly get myself dressed

And I soon head off, to the nearby wood

A place, where my soul finds refreshment

A realm, where my body and mind feel good

As I traipse down a very familiar wooded path

I feel the crunch of sparkling snow under my feet

These days, whenever I’m feeling down and blue

I find myself seeking out this most soothing retreat

Here, there is no man-made frenzy, crime, or war

Here, there is something still left, of God’s Creation

Here, I can still find the world, as it was meant to be

Which provides a blissful, soul-soothing, sensation

Soon, I inhale the very fragrant aroma of pine

What a marvelous, invigorating, natural smell

And soon, I gratefully perch on an old oak stump

As I patiently listen for old friends that here dwell

As I sit in blissful solitude, a wondrous chorus begins

The tiny, winged forest dwellers, are soon in lovely song

I close my eyes, as they now very graciously serenade me

Almost immediately, a feeling of serenity, rights my wrong

When I open my eyes, I spot a magnificent white-tailed deer

He is so very joyously listening to this glorious symphony, too

Being out here, amongst such a truly wondrous natural setting

It usually doesn’t take very long for my waning spirit to renew

Minutes later, I feel a playful wet nose nuzzling my cheek

One of my faithful canines has found me rejoicing out here

Now, the two of us pleasantly traipse on, through a clearing

On a marvelous new winter’s day, so fresh, bright, and clear

I woke before the dawn,

Feeling, restless and blue;

I knew that I needed a walk,

For my waning spirit to renew.

The cuz don't much care for dark awakenings. Still, the early bird catches the worm and the morning stump attracts the deer, and I know from experience the canines are ready at all hours. Patrick

Beautiful poem!
I take great solace and strength from nature too, and there is nothing I'd rather do in the world than get lost on a long aimless hike.
Blessings,
Christine

Awww, this is so sweet, and spirtual, and all in rhyme...what more could you ask for, enjoyed it....oh btw, this afternoon when I drove up my driveway, there were three deer at my door, I was hoping to take a pic of them with my cell phone, but they watched me for a few minutes then bolted. They were so pretty! Happy New Year Ogie!

A fantastic poem with a wake-up call for all. We all need to find a retreat spot and spend a few minutes each day taking in nature as God intended it to be deep into our senses.

God Bless you Ed as we start the new year fresh!

Refreshing indeed. Nature is the perfect escape from man made frenzy where the only crimes are commited by critters and there are no squirrel police on nut patrol.

This is pure magic, Ed! You put me right there...I heard, smelled and felt the wondrous beauty that surrounded you! I can appreciate how special this venture into nature's arms was for you....I feel the same way! Guess there's a recluse in me...because I'd rather be solitary in the woods, with my precious canine friend and all of the forest dwellers, than with people anyday!

Loved this!!!!

Anna
