“He was in a lot of distress.
He was shaking,
And I thought it was because he was cold,
But he was traumatized.”
Kayaker Rory O’Conner
Music: Agony
When I first read this very sad story
My mind flashed back to New Orleans
Where so many pets saw their owners die
In a hurricane that was so violent and mean
We found many sad and extremely traumatized pets
Many of them carried their terrible grief, in their eyes
We could soon recognize dogs that had lost their friends
Merely gazing into their faces, often made many of us cry
One of my rescued Katrina canines is named Tater
He was the sole survivor at a trailer park on the sea
I often have to wake him from his terrible nightmares
Six years later, I know he still has horrendous memories
Last Saturday, Barney was out for a very pleasant run
With his human being in Florida, about a mile from shore
When a drunk driver plowed directly into the both of them
In one second, Barney’s whole world changed forever more
He watched his beloved human perish, right before his eyes
And although badly injured himself, he now fled into the sea
He was soon about a half mile out in the ocean’s choppy waters
When a man out kayaking spotted him, and he pulled him to safety
Some people believe that canines are ‘just animals’ with no feelings
But I believe that animals feel as much pain as we human beings do
I have seen many traumatized, grieving, severely depressed, canines
And I sincerely hope that Barney can recover from his traumatic blues
Now just try to imagine the enormous pain and suffering that pets must endure
When so many of us so callously abandon them, in America’s cities and towns
Just about every left behind animal that we rescue from the mean streets today
Besides being physically in bad shape, in their eyes, horrendous agony is found
