Sadly Inspired By A Veteran I Recently Met,
As I Chased Yet Another Homeless Canine

But sometimes I need some help, you know?
I don’t look for pity. I look for understanding.”
The Man On The Street
I have seen him out here before
On a frigid, snowy, winter’s day
Believe it or not, a WWII veteran
Forced to beg, he has his bills to pay
His meager pension, just doesn’t cover it all
So, he stands on the street, asking for change
Some people, are cordial to him, and help out
While others, yell at him, to get out of the way
As they do with most ‘street bums’ they encounter
Many yell out, “Get a Job!” but this man is now 85
He fought, and nearly died, for this country of ours
And now today, he is forced to beg, just to stay alive
Each and every month now, he finds it a bit harder
To pay his rent and utility bills, and make ends meet
He’s forced to choose between prescriptions and food
So although embarrassed, he’s out begging on the street
His beloved spouse of many years also recently died of cancer
Her medical bills and procedures, soon took everything he had
Today, there are far too many just like him, all across America
What is happening to so many today, is already far beyond sad
Yet, our clueless millionaire politicians take a month off for the Holidays
Then, they all bicker and fight, and very pompously pretend that they care
As I give him a few dollars, then resume chasing the starving, homeless dog
I wonder what’s happened to our nation as I see so many in need everywhere
My very own grandfather, saw these very same things, that I’m seeing today
It was back in The Great Depression, eighty-three years ago, in the year 1929
Most of our so called ‘leaders’ claim we have made a lot of progress since then
But to me, the more I see now, I think we’re horridly spiraling backwards in time
