A Follow-up To My Last Poem,
‘The Man On The Street’
On That Bitterly Frigid Winter’s Day,
Both a Sad Man and a Sad Dog I Did Meet
Year 2011 was one of the worst years, for America’s pets
Thousands upon thousands, were relinquished at its shelters
And thousands upon thousands more, were cruelly abandoned
Dumped in cities, towns, rural areas, parks, and streetside curbs
And this is horrendously occurring all across our vast nation today
There are hundreds, of now bursting at the seam shelters in the U.S.
Many people still believe these shelters will find their pets a new home
But very sadly, less than half get adopted, the shelters euthanize the rest
Just one animal shelter in my area, took in nearly 16,000 pets last year
Of these, nearly 7,500 loyal animals, were relinquished by their families
And more than 8,500 dogs and cats classified as ‘strays’ were brought in
The sad, starving, sick, abandoned pets, now forced to live on the streets
Very sadly for animal lovers and pet rescuers like myself, these numbers are abysmal
Since at this one animal shelter alone, over 8,000 innocent animals were put to sleep
Multiply this number, by the hundreds of shelters doing the same, all across our nation
It’s horridly evident we’re no longer guardians; our bond with them, we no longer keep
And if this isn’t bad enough, add the thousands more suffering in America’s Puppy Mills
And the thousands more now being maimed and mauled and killed, in Dog Fighting Rings
So many still believe that only human beings have been adversely affected by our economy
But pet rescuers all across this vast nation of ours, shudder to think, what this year will bring
Please Do Whatever You Possibly Can To Help These Innocent Victims,
Support Your Local Pet Rescue Groups, and Become Animal Advocates;
Adopt-Don’t Shop-For Your Next Pet,; Donate; and Become a Volunteer;
Open Your Heart, and Save The Life of At Least One Precious Dog or Cat.
This Dog On The Street Will Now Get His Very Deserved Second Chance,
And I’ve Already Named Him ‘Ernie’ In Honor of The Man On The Street
