Heading northbound on the tollway
The woman in the tollbooth near tears
“I see you love dogs; just look at these,
A monster just dumped them out here!”
She shows me four tiny, newborn, Shepherd puppies
In a small cardboard box, in her small tollbooth stand
“Can you believe it? Some guy just raced through here
And tossed them. What the hell is wrong with this man?”
“By the time I ran out attempting to gather them up,
Two of the puppies were already run over by traffic;
Thank God, I was at least able to scoop up these four,
I tell you, my fellow human beings truly make me sick.”
We were both nearly in tears now, as I gave her the name
Of a wonderful woman, who heads a Shepherd Rescue group
The courageous and compassionate tollbooth worker thanked me
And as I drove on with my dogs, I was now consumed by the blues
What is wrong with humanity these days? I didn’t know the answer
Especially since spaying and neutering our pets, is not very expensive
But instead, so many just dump their pet’s unwanted offspring like trash
Today, over 80 percent of unwanted, unloved animals, will not get to live
Over her lifetime, an un-spayed female dog can have hundreds of offspring
And, an un-neutered male canine, can father thousands of unwanted children
Today, America’s shelters are overflowing, because so many are still so callous
Don’t Be A Dick: a person who continues to perpetuate this suffering without end
Please Help Us To Reduce This Horrendous Number of Pet Throw-Aways,
Please Urge Everyone You Know With A Pet, To Spay Or Neuter, Today;
And, Please Urge Everyone You Know To Adopt, Not Shop, For Their Pets,
Backyard Breeders and Puppy Mills Add To The Problem In So Many Ways.
